BCA average starting salary – ₹3-6 LPA
BTech average starting salary – ₹6-12 LPA
BTech from IIT/NIT – ₹12-50 LPA (yes, this range is absurdly high, but it’s for a minuscule percentage of graduates)
BTech from average private college – ₹3.5-8 LPA
So, clearly higher studies in BTech would give you better average salary. But the catch is – there are way fewer good colleges for BTech compared to BCA. A regular private college graduate with poor placement could earn lesser than someone with a BCA degree from Christ or Symbiosis. Therefore, it’s not so much about the course, but rather the college you graduate from.

- BCA : ₹2.5-4 lakh/year
- BTech : ₹5-10 lakh/year
BCA is 3 years long while BTech is 4 years long so ultimately you are not just paying double to get a BTech, you will also be spending an extra year in college to earn it.
The Myth We Need To Put To Rest 🚫
“B.tech gets you a job whereas BCA is a backup”
This is quite simply false because in 2026, recruiters are going to give a toss about your DSA skills, your knowledge of Python, and your ability to code on the cloud than your degree. A BCA graduate with an impressive portfolio has a better chance of landing a job than a BTech graduate with a lackluster one.
So which one should you pick?
Go BTech if
you want to pursue core engineering jobs (not only IT)
appear for competitive exams like GATE, SSC JE, UPSC IES etc. (BCA is not eligible for these exams)
get good placements in good college (if you can get good college)
Go for BCA if
you want to get into software field faster as compared to BTech (BCA is of 3 years while BTech is of 4 years)
you are budget conscious
you have plans of doing self study along with certification courses anyway
